In Development: A new AT project is in the works! Soon AT will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2009, FCE will be producing a feature that is tentatively entitled, "AT: A Series of Scenes". It will probably run more than an hour. More details are coming soon! Summary: In 1985, Producer-director and writer Yolanda Darnell (a.k.a. Denyse De Shannon) pitched the idea of a teen drama circling the lives of a group of young people who participate in a dance show to a local cable channel. The programming manager who ran the cable studio rejected the idea. He suggested that she did not have the capabilities to attempt such a feat. So she shelved the idea and worked on other projects. Three years later, she proved him wrong. Opportunity beckoned and Darnell was given the chance to write and produce her first vehicle for the Almost There series, Ms. Shelley B. The popular R & B Music in the late eighties, New Jack Swing and the 1987 John Waters' film, Hairspray, all inspired the first episode. Ms Shelley B. was filmed on a weekend and aired a month later on local cable channels throughout Southern California. In Almost There's four and a half year run on various cable systems, the young adult soap was geared toward young people between the ages of 16-22 and dealt solely with social issues. Before the series ended, the show reached approximately over three million households in Southern California. Original music and even number #1 Billboard songs were used in most of the episodes. During its run, hits from artists like Jomanda's, Got A Love For You, to Color Me Badd's, I Adore Mi Amor, appeared in the series. International superstar, Michael Jackson and pop recording artist, Dino (24/7; Summergirls), music was never play on the series but both were favorites of the members on The Dance Connection. Almost There was set in a fictional multicultural suburb of Los Angeles called, South Hills, CA. which is located on the Orange County and L.A. borderline. Almost There accomplished a milestone when Darnell added several storylines which lasted two or more episodes. Matter Of The Heart (Episodes Ten and Eleven), The Freedom Of Choice (Episodes 12 and 13) and The American Way, (Episodes 14 and 15) are sequels of Matter Of The Heart . The other plotlines in the series are The Voters' Choice, The Breaking Point, and Working Class People. Yolanda
Darnell was the brains of Almost There. Not only did she directed almost all of
the episodes, but she also produced and wrote all of the scripts for the show.
In the twenty-ninth episode, Darnell became more concerned with the quality of
the show and added editor to her list of job duties. In 1990 and 1991, Almost
There won two cable awards. Almost There ceased production in March, 1993. For
